Windows Subsystem for Android (WSA) now works better with your favorite games, thanks to the August 2022 update. Microsoft is only shipping Android subsystem version 2206.40000.15.0 to Windows Insiders in the United States and we don’t know when it will be rolled out to more users .
The main highlight of the August 2022 update of the Android subsystem is better support for input compatibility in apps like games. Microsoft is adding a new set of shims that can be enabled in the Windows subsystem for the Android Settings app.
Enabling the new switches will allow you to enjoy better experiences in various apps and games that rely on joysticks (mapped to WASD). According to the release notes, Microsoft is also improving in-game gamepad support and aiming control. For example, you can now aim with the arrow keys.
Similarly, you can also scroll games using arrow keys, a feature that contained bugs in previous versions.
In addition to improved gaming support, the August 2022 WSA update also brings network improvements. Users can associate a VPN IP address with their Android apps and they can also bypass government censorship or hide online tracking by enabling the “Advanced Networking Feature”. This also gives you access to Netflix in a different region.
For better VPN integration, Microsoft has also improved the dialog when an unsupported VPN is detected. This gives more clarity when a particular VPN is not supported.
It is worth noting that some VPNs do not work with Advanced Networking. If your VPN doesn’t work or Android apps can’t access the network when VPN is enabled, make sure the “Advanced Network” option in the Windows subsystem for the Android Settings app is disabled.
Other improvements in the August 2022 Android Subsystem Update:
- The minimum window size is 220 dp by default.
- You can now view and store diagnostic data in the Windows Android Settings subsystem using a toggle.
- Security updates and fixes, including image improvements.
Microsoft has fixed several graphics fixes including app flickering and image corruption.
It is worth noting that the Android subsystem will be regularly updated with new features or improvements outside of the major Windows releases. For example, the July 2022 update fixed trackpad scrolling issues in apps, added support for AV1 codec support, and updated Chromium WebView integration
You can expect similar improvements in the September 2022 update.
