These are the iPhone models that will get iOS 16 this fall

One of the benefits of owning an iPhone is the exceptional support you get from Apple. Software updates, in particular, are typically delivered for at least five years after an iPhone model goes on sale — arguably an industry-leading figure.

Unfortunately, there comes a time when an iPhone can no longer handle the latest iOS version. With today’s announcement at WWDC, many people must be wondering: Will my iPhone get iOS 16?

The answer to the question, of course, depends on which iPhone model you have. Here is the official iOS compatibility information provided by Apple itself:

Which iPhones will get the iOS 16 update?

  • All iPhone 13 models
  • All iPhone 12 models
  • All iPhone 11 models
  • iPhone XS and XS Max
  • iPhone X
  • iPhone XR
  • iPhone 8 and 8 Plus
  • iPhone SE 2020
  • iPhone SE 2022

This is the official list of iPhones that are compatible with iOS 16, provided by Apple. The two oldest iPhone models are the iPhone 8 and iPhone 8 Plus. Both were released in 2017 and it’s cool to see even a 5 year old iPhone getting the latest software from Apple.

Unfortunately, the iPhone 6s, iPhone 6s Plus, and iPhone 7 won’t be updated to iOS 16 this year. We expect the iOS 15.6 update to be the last major software patch they’ll get. If you’re still rocking one of them, you might be interested in checking out some of the flow iPhone 13 deals, or if you’re not in a hurry, there’s one iPhone 14 is expected to be announced in September.
Curious to try iOS 16 ahead of time? As is now tradition, Apple will release a public beta in July 2022, and you’ll be able to download and test it on a compatible iPhone — as long as you don’t mind finding a bug here and there. The official release of iOS 16 is scheduled for this fall and is expected to coincide with the announcement of the iPhone 14 series.
