Microsoft accidentally confirms Windows 10 22H2 (Build 19045)

Windows 11 will soon get its first major feature update ‘version 22H2’. Now it looks like Windows 10 22H2 (the next major feature update for the old OS) is also coming later this year as it was accidentally confirmed by Microsoft.

As Microsoft officials have previously stated, the company has not completely forgotten about Windows 10. Of course, there has been a lot of fuss about Windows 11 lately and new features are also being developed especially for the new operating system. However, Windows 10 isn’t going anywhere and continues to receive feature updates.

References to Windows 10 22H2 (Build 19045) have now been spotted in the latest optional cumulative update. As expected, Windows 10 22H2 (Build 19045) is built on top of Windows 10 version 2004 and will not make any significant changes to the operating system.

Version 22H2 will again be a minor upgrade and it will be the fourth such upgrade in a row. While the update doesn’t make any major changes to the feature front, it’s still expected to come with minor tweaks. For example, you can expect the new search interface that was recently rolled out to Windows 11.

Microsoft has previously said feature updates to Windows 10 will “have a range of features” and will be implemented “using maintenance technology.” In other words, Windows 10 version 22H2 will be yet another activation package. This has been spotted in the Release Preview Channel according to both Microsoft and references.

The activation package is essentially a switch that enables the dormant features in the operating system and enhances the operating system/build numbers. For example, this year’s activation package will increase the OS version and build number to 22H2 and Build 19045, respectively.

Anyone using the latest optional and quality updates can upgrade to Windows 10 22H2 in a jiffy. The installation and upgrade process would be very quick as the update is essentially a refresh of the Windows 10 version (v2004) as they are essentially part of the same core build.

What to expect in Windows 10 22H2

We have no idea what’s coming with Windows 10’s 2022 feature update, but it’s likely that the update will focus on productivity and security, meaning many of the changes won’t be significant for consumers.

As for the release date, we expect the update to launch in the fall, around the same time as Windows 11 22H2. In other words, an official statement is expected soon with a limited number of people getting access to the update.

In addition, Microsoft has not officially confirmed the update and plans are always subject to change.
