Apple’s iOS 15.4.1 update is a minor upgrade, but it can take quite some time to install on your iPhone.
The company has released a new iOS 15.4.1 update and the software brings a short list of changes for iPhone users. The update has no new features, but does have a number of essential fixes on board.
Moving your iPhone from iOS 15.4 to iOS 15.4.1 will give you the shortest list of changes and smallest download size. To give you an idea, the iOS 15.4.1 update is about 300MB for iPhone 12 Pro users who are upgrading from iOS 15.4.
If you’re upgrading from an older version of iOS, your iOS 15.4.1 download may be even bigger because the changes from the update(s) you skipped are baked in.
While some of you may want to skip downloading iOS 15.4.1 for now, most people should install the software now or in the near future.
If you decide to install iOS 15.4.1 on your iPhone, you’ll need to set aside some time to properly install the upgrade on your device.
Moving a device from one version of iOS to another often causes problems, so you’ll want to check your phone’s download, installation, and performance once the installation is complete.
We can’t tell you exactly how long the process will take as it can vary. That said, we can help you estimate how much time you should set aside if you choose to install the new software on your iPhone.

Before starting the iOS 15.4.1 download, make sure you are prepared.
If you don’t know how to properly prepare for an iOS upgrade, check out our pre-installation guide. It will guide you through the most important steps to take before starting the installation process.
You should be able to go through these steps in 30 minutes, but it all depends on your skill level and the current state of your iPhone.
If you haven’t backed up your data in a while, or if you’re unfamiliar with iOS 15.4.1’s changes, the pre-installation process may take longer.
You don’t have to follow every step in the guide, but you at least want to make sure that your phone’s data is backed up properly.
Data loss issues are quite rare, but if you are storing sensitive data (photos, videos, etc.) on your device, it is always better to be careful.
Download iOS 15.4.1
Once you’ve prepared, it’s time to start the download process.
Again, the exact size of your iOS 15.4.1 download will depend on your iPhone model and the version of iOS currently running.
If you’re running the latest version of iOS 15, you’ll see the smallest download size again. If you are using an older version, your download may be larger.
If you’re using a fast Wi-Fi network, the download should complete in less than 10 minutes. If your connection is slower or if you download during peak times, you may be looking at 10 minutes or more.
iOS 15.4.1 Installation
Once your device has finished fetching iOS 15.4.1 from Apple’s servers, the installation process will begin. This may take longer than the download.
If you’re upgrading from iOS 15.4, it will take about 10 minutes for the iOS 15.4.1 installation to complete. It took about seven minutes to install on an iPhone 12 Pro previously running iOS 15.4.
Your iPhone may reboot itself a few times during the installation process, but this is completely normal. Your device should boot normally once the installation process is complete.
After the installation is complete, you may need to spend time logging into your iCloud account, logging into your device’s various apps and services, and/or setting up Apple Pay.
You may also want to spend some time checking your important data (photos, music, etc.) to make sure everything is transferring correctly.
After you’ve done that, make sure to test your core applications and services to make sure they work normally. New iOS software can cause apps to go haywire.
If you notice a problem with one or more of your apps, try downloading the latest version. Developers are still rolling out iOS 15 support updates.
