Google to combine Meet and Duo in one mobile app for one platform

Google made a big announcement today, revealing that it is combining two of its video calling apps to create a single video streaming platform that it will call Meet. The two video platforms that will be combined are Meet and Duo. The first is a streaming video platform used to engage as many as 250 people in a single video chat. Duo is a free video chat app for iOS and Android.

Duo leaves Google with one video platform called Meet . will call

In addition to combining Duo and Meet, eventually Google will also eliminate Duo and leave Google with a single video platform, Meet. Javier Soltero, head of Google Workspace, said: “It’s been really important to understand how people make the choice which tool to use, for what purpose and in what circumstances,” Meet has been used for meetings and group chats.
Meanwhile, Duo has a lot in common with FaceTime because it was developed for one-to-cone video chatting rather than the large conferences that Meet and Zoom are used for. By integrating Meet and Duo, you can start a meeting almost anywhere. One advantage of Duo is the ability to start a video chat by simply calling a person’s phone number instead of relying on someone to click a link or tap a giant “Meet” button.

As Duo and Meet become one, Duo’s mobile app will become the default and the Duo app will be rebranded as Google Meet later this year. The current Meet app is called Meet Original. An update will eventually become available for Duo that will bring Meet features to the Duo platform.

Duo gets these new features thanks to the update:

  • Customize virtual backgrounds in conversations and meetings.
  • Schedule meetings so everyone can attend at a time that suits them.
  • Use in-meeting chat for deeper engagement.
  • Share live content to allow interaction with all participants in the conversation.
  • Get real-time captioning to better support accessibility and encourage participation.
  • Increase the size of video calls from a current limit of 32 to 100 participants.
  • Integrate with other tools including Gmail, Google Calendar, Assistant, Messaging and more.
Dave Citron, the product director of Google’s video products, said, “The Duo mobile app was very advanced, especially under the hood and in emerging markets, where network connectivity was sparse or highly variable.” Citron says it’s different on the web; There is Meet, the much more developed web platform that “forms the basis of the new combined system”. But in either case, the Googler says, the idea is to combine Meet and Duo with something that’s available to everyone without excluding a user.

Meet is the obvious choice for Google to focus on because of its video and voice options

Workspace’s Soltero says that as Meet has grown during the pandemic, it has become the obvious choice for Google to focus on for its video and voice options. Google has a lot of work ahead of it as it tries to recognize which device you’re using at any given time and only sends notifications to that device.

Google says, “As part of our mission to create a connected experience for all users, we are excited to bring our video calling and conferencing technologies together into a single, powerful, easy-to-use solution. Video communications is a key area of our focus. and you’ll continue to see our investments in Google Meet to help people connect, collaborate, and share experiences on any device, at home, school, and work.

We are doing everything we can to make the transition from Duo to Meet as smooth as possible,” said Google. In 2020, Google began offering Meet for free to users and also released more than 100 features and improvements for the app.
