According to a new rumor, Samsung is reportedly working on an “A-series” foldable smartphone, which will be released sometime in 2024-2025. Since Samsung’s A-series is their mid-range product line, the device may have a significantly lower price tag than the Z Fold and Z Flip.
This interesting bit of speculation was first shared in a tweet and then covered by Sammobile† Now would be the time for a little disclaimer – the alleged leak should be taken with a healthy degree of skepticism, as the original source (@chunvn8888) isn’t particularly reliable.
It should also be noted that this is just the latest in a long line of rumors about a potentially affordable foldable option from Samsung. Similar speculations have been made several times in recent years.
In any case, the prospect of an affordable foldable Samsung is an interesting thought experiment. What really stops people from buying foldable products?
Many would be quick to point out the price. After all, a Galaxy Z Fold can easily cost 2 iPhones upon release (even though Samsung lowered the price with the Fold 3). A foldable A-series could finally tell us whether users are willing to invest in a foldable smartphone, if it is competitively priced.
For reference, the Galaxy Z Flip 3, Samsung’s cheaper folding option, performs incredibly well in terms of sales. Not only do Flip sales far outstrip its bigger brother, the Fold, but the Flip has now become the most popular foldable on the market.
The problem is, we’re not entirely sure if this is a result of the clamshell design or the more reasonable price tag. Perhaps we will soon find out the answers to these and many other questions.
