7 million iPhone users urged to delete these 84 scammy apps and quietly charge them

Written by admin

Apple has a firm grip on which apps iPhone owners can use. iOS users can only download apps from the App Store. The company also takes a 30 percent commission from developers. Despite these Measures – which many believe are unfair – that are ostensibly designed to keep users safe, there are still many rogue apps in Apple’s official application store.

Apple refuses to do anything about a large number of fraudulent apps

According to VPN review site VPNcheckApple has failed to address the majority of the 133 rogue apps Avast found in March 2021. At that time, they had been downloaded 500 million times and grossed $365 million.

15 months later, 84 of those apps are still in the App Store. These apps are called fleeceware and are designed to save you money. So while there is nothing malicious in their code and they don’t steal your data, they are still quite dangerous as they come with hidden outrageous fees and charges.

According to Vpncheck’s estimate, they cheat users out of $100 million annually. The apps have been downloaded 7.2 million times and generate monthly revenue of $8.6 million.

It is not that difficult to identify such apps. Most are entertainment apps like virtual music tools or utilities like flashlights and calculators. They can also lurk under fortune telling apps, photo or video filters or editors, volume boosters, quiz based games or wallpapers. Another telltale sign is a plethora of paid 5-star reviews posted using fake reviewer names to hide real, lower-rated reviews.

These apps lure users with a free trial, although it is normally easy to find a free alternative. They come with hidden fees and may charge you multiple times or charge a higher amount at checkout. In addition, they are designed in such a way that it is very difficult to unsubscribe from their services, so they may continue to bill you even after you delete them. Also, be wary of fake ads claiming that the app is recommended by Apple.

If you’ve downloaded one of the 84 apps and can’t opt out, it’s best to ask your bank to stop processing payment requests they’ve submitted.

So why isn’t Apple removing these apps from the App Store?

Given how easy it is to spot these apps, it seems that Apple cares more about 30 percent off, search ads, and App Store profitability than protecting users from scam apps, Vpncheck thinks.
